Biology: Osmosis, is this Hypertonic or Isotonic?

ACSP English Program is committed to providing active learning experiences to EP learners. Mr. Bogdan Pangin and Miss Siriwan Yuthongkham organised the “Plant cell membrane behavior in the hypertonic and isotonic conditions laboratory activity” for Secondary 3-4 students.

This activity had 3 objectives: 1. to understand the concept of osmosis and its effects on the cell membrane in isotonic and hypertonic conditions, 2. to observe the behavior of onion epidermal cells in different osmotic environments, and 3. to compare the differences between isotonic and hypertonic conditions.

The students loved the experiment, especially the students who would like to pursue courses in botany and agriculture in the future. Understanding this lesson will help them understand why it is important to maintain the balance of water and solutes for the plant’s health.

If a plant is not watered properly, the extracellular fluid becomes isotonic or hypertonic, leaving excess water in the plant cells, causing withering.

The learners are looking forward to more interesting lab activities in the future.
