P1 Maths: Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach

Learning is well underway in the ACSP English Program for the beginning of the 2022 Academic Year. Yesterday we solidified learning of numbers to 10 using egg cartons which acted as tens frames for the children to discover visually and absorb mentally. This lesson of making numbers in the egg cartons will support learning of 1 more and 1 less next week and also computation of numbers above 10 moving forward.
We love putting tangible/concrete materials into our lessons to support the children’s ability to grasp and recall concepts, which is inline with the CPA approach (concrete-pictorial-abstract). This Singaporean approach, first developed by Jerome Bruner, has been well documented to support early years learning and is essential when teaching maths for mastery.
